Frozen water bodies are never completely safe. Minimize your risk on the ice! It is critical that the quality, quantity and type of ice available be evaluated before you use it for travel. Only new, clear and hard ice is recommended for travel. Risk factors that weaken or "rot" ice should also be considered, like thick snow blankets preventing hardening, and current or strong winds causing pressure breaks and ridges. |
Avoid... layered ice caused by sudden temp changes, rotten & cracked ice caused by moving water, slushy ice on or near rivers and strong currents. |
